Ash Wednesday is February 14, 2018

Lent Begins February 14, 2018

Ash Wednesday services will be at both MLLC and Waldeck Evangelical Lutheran Church.  You are invited to choose which one best suits your situation.  Both services will offer Holy Communion and the Imposition of Ashes as we begin our Lenten Season.

Worship at MLLC at 7:30 p.m.

Worship at Waldeck Lutheran Church at 5:45 p.m.

Waldeck Evangelical Lutheran Church is in a shared ministry with MLLC.  The Church is located at 6915 Waldeck Church Lane, Ledbetter, TX 78946 – this is about 6.5 miles south of Ledbetter at the corner of FM 2145 and FM 1291.

The Exhortation on Ash Wednesday invites us into the season of Lent.  Here is that Exhortation as presented in Lutheran Book of Worship – the book used at Waldeck Evangelical Lutheran Church:

Brothers and sisters: God created us to experience joy in communion with him, to love all humanity, and to live in harmony with all of his creation. But sin separates us from God, our neighbors, and creation, and so we do not enjoy the life our Creator intended for us. Also, by our sin we grieve our Father, who does not desire us to come under his judgment, but to turn to him and live.

As disciples of the Lord Jesus we are called to struggle against everything that leads us away from love of God and neighbor. Repentance, fasting, prayer, and works of love—the discipline of Lent—help us to wage our spiritual warfare. I invite you, therefore, to commit yourselves to this struggle and confess your sins, asking our Father for strength to persevere in your Lenten discipline.

We are very blessed by the opportunity to work side by side with the people of Waldeck Lutheran Church.  Together we are glorifying God, loving our neighbors and loving one another.

Christmas Boxes for Port of Houston Seafarers 2017

We had a fantastic year of preparing, packing and delivering the Christmas Boxes for the Port of Houston Seafarers.  Thank you to the numerous people who donated items, sorted items, packed boxes, wrapped the shoe boxes, and brought the items to the Houston Seafarers Center.  Thank you to the Men in Mission of MLLC for sponsoring this program each year.

Here is a bit of history of our preparation and sending of boxes:

In 2014 there were 34 boxes assembled.

In 2015 there were 50 boxes assembled.

In 2016 there were 49 boxes assembled.

In 2017 there were 63 boxes assembled.  This is a record high since we revived our participation in this ministry.

The Port of Houston Chaplains are our ambassadors to these seafarers. They visit the ships and bring the boxes to the crews. On their web site the chaplains tell us: “Crew sizes vary between 8 and 30, with an average number of 22 seafarers to gift per ship. In 2015, we placed 12,278 gifts on board 538 ships which had seafarers from 65 different countries! These gifts had been donated to the seafarers by 246 churches and organizations! The Christmas boxes are personally carried to each ship by your staff of Port Chaplains.” Their web site is here – Click Link.

Here are some photos of the work of assembling the boxes in November 2017.

Here are some photos of the new Houston Seafarers Center and the delivery of the boxes on November 28.

Hurricane Relief Grants

Hurricane Harvey

Our Gulf Coast Synod, ELCA, has posted information about how to apply for grants for Hurricane and Flood Relief.  Here is what they have to say about this:

Dear Gulf Coast Synod Leaders,

In the weeks since Hurricane Harvey, we have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support from God’s people around the world.  Many gifts were shared with us on your behalf.  In an effort to assess needs to distribute these gifts, we invite you to participate in our disaster grant process.  Although the funds cannot replace all that you have lost, we pray that the grants disbursed will be of help in a significant way.

This link will direct you to the page on our website that was prepared for this unique purpose: gulfcoastsynod.org/congregations/disaster/grant

You can also find this page by clicking the yellow “Disaster Grant” link, on the Disaster Prep & Recovery page of the synod website (gulfcoastsynod.org).

Our timeline for distribution is:

Application deadline: December 31, 2017.

Notification of grant status: January 31, 2018.

We will take into consideration critical needs and respond appropriately to the requests identified in that manner.

Please note that the phrase “disaster recovery needs” includes damage done to the location of your special community outreach ministries, such as food pantry, book pantry/collection, and so forth, as well as the ability to continue these ministries following the disaster that may or may not have flooded your congregation’s facilities. We can discuss any questions you have about what can be represented in your request.

Amount of Your Request Range

We ask that you request a dollar range (e.g. $2K to $5K), rather than a specific dollar amount. This allows us some flexibility as we determine how best to stretch the dollars in the fund.

Designated Contact Person

Please clearly identify the person who will be accountable to corresponding with the synod about this grant request. We ask that the contact person provide an update to the synod 3-6 months following distribution, as to how the money was actually used.  Before-&-after photos of your project, along with a couple of sentences on how the grant supported your recovery efforts, will be used in synod communications about funding, recruiting volunteers, and especially to those who want to support this recovery effort with their prayers.

About Additional Documents

Please attach any documents that will assist in decision-making regarding this request. This may be a document you already have distributed to your church council or congregation outlining the status of the damage and the related repair/rebuild costs. If the document is accessible by link to your Web site, please indicate that by providing the link in your response to us.

Sample Documents

Thanks to Salem Evangelical, Houston, and St James/Santiago Apostόl for allowing their own status statements to be used as samples. These documents are an example of the questions we will ask about your current status.

Thank you for your commitment to fulfilling God’s call to the Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod for holistic ministry in this region.

We look forward to hearing from you through this means and in continuing conversations about our service together in the Gulf Coast.

Blessings,

Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod Disaster Recovery Team

Decorating for Advent & Christmas

Christmas Decorating 2017 3

The people of MLLC have been working hard to decorate for the seasons of Advent and Christmas.  It takes time, love and energy to make this all come together.  Thankfully, we have these to share in abundance.  We had elementary, junior high, senior high youth working on this, as well as various adults up into their 90s.  It is such a joy to see all generations working together on a project. Thank you to all who gave of their time to decorate the church, both inside and outside.  There are still some small details to prepare, and these will be ready for Sunday.

Here are some photos of the work which has been done by the crew of youth and adults:

Advent begins this Sunday, December 3, which is the latest it can start.  Advent begins four Sundays before Christmas Day.  The Sundays of Advent are December 3, 10, 17 and 24.  We gather for worship each Sunday at 10:00 a.m.  We also gather for worship on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of each month at 6:00 p.m. – this month that is on December 9 and 23.

Some special items of note for these Sundays:

December 10 – Children’s Christmas Program and Brunch

All are invited to the meal following worship.  This is a pot luck meal, with main dish soups provided by the Christian Education Committee. Even if you do not have a child in the program we invite you to enjoy the fellowship and food

December 17 – Carol Service

This annual tradition provides an opportunity for various people in the congregation to share their musical gifts and talents during worship.  Contact the church office soon so we can include your musical presentation.  Singers, choirs, musicians, musical groups and the like will offer Advent and Christmas music during worship.  All are invited and welcome to worship the Lord and to enjoy the music on this special day.

Advent Wednesday Services

All are welcome as we will celebrate the Season of Advent with our partner church, Waldeck Evangelical Lutheran Church.  The church is located at 6915 Waldeck Church Lane, Ledbetter, TX 78946 – this is about 6 miles south of Ledbetter at the corner of FM 2145 and FM 1291.

Clarence attended Washington County schools and, at the age of sixteen, was employed by Blue Bell Creameries in Brenham.  He advanced from an entry level position to the Assistant Division Manager in Austin.  Retiring in 1994 with over 40 years of service, he was honored to be a part of the Blue Bell family.

Clarence, known to many as “Big C”, enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and spending time with his family, friends and beloved dog “Lady”.  He continuously looked for outdoor projects on which to work.  Whether it was landscaping the yard with his mowers and tractor, mending fences or repairing and painting his workshop and barns, Clarence worked tirelessly.  He will always be remembered for the family favorite barbeque chicken that he cooked for decades on the pit he built himself.
