Christmas Boxes for Port of Houston Seafarers 2024

New Time: 9:00 a.m. on Monday, November 25, 2024

You are invited to participate in this continued ministry of MLLC.  The Men in Mission of MLLC initiated the caring work of Christmas Boxes for Port of Houston Seafarers. This is a congregational project this year. We have heard that the Seafarers Christmas Boxes are needed more now than ever. The total number of boxes given by all organizations for Christmas 2023 was 8,659.

Our love for these neighbors will help them to know the love of God and to make life less difficult for them.  We will be collecting items and preparing the Christmas Boxes for the Port of Houston Seafarers.  The goal for this year is 100+ boxes.

The Packing Day for the Boxes for Seafarers is Monday, November 25, 2024, at 9:00 a.m.  The work will take place in the Parlor, near the church offices.  All are invited to participate.

For this year, please gather items such as these for the men on the ships – you can buy things throughout the spring, summer, and fall drop these off at any time up until 9 a.m. on November 25, 2024.  There is a large blue storage bin for this purpose in the room directly across from the church office.

If you have any questions, please contact Pastor David Tinker

Thankoffering Sunday – November 13

This service is an annual tradition at MLLC, and in many Lutheran churches.

Our annual service will be led by the women of the congregation.  Our guest speaker will be Carolyn Bennetsen, who will be sharing about quilting ministry.  Music will be led by our Praise Team.  Worship will be at 10 a.m.

We will also offer our usual Saturday service at 6 p.m., but this will not be the Thankoffering event.

Here is an introduction to the day:

2022 Thankoffering Service

As we make our Thankofferings today, we share in a tradition that goes back to the 1800s or even earlier. Then, when it seemed that there was not enough money to carry out the work of the church, the women would act together as “cent” or “mite” societies. Each woman would set aside offerings at home throughout the year in thanksgiving for blessings received. And on occasion, the women would come together as we do today, joining their offerings together to support ministry of many kinds.

When Women of the ELCA was formed in 1987, we committed to continue this tradition of giving in gratitude for blessings. Each year, in thousands of congregations, Thankofferings are given to support the life-changing ministries of Women of the ELCA. Together, we do more than we could ever do apart. In gratitude for all God has given to us, and with hope for all that is to come, let us now give our Thankoffering.

A National Holiday

The beginning of September brings a Holy Day of sorts for all of us.  Labor Day is a civic holiday to celebrate at least two things: 1 – the opportunity for work; and 2 – the American Labor Movement.  As Lutheran Christians we go deeper with this and view all work as part of God’s calling and his provision of our daily bread.  All Christians are doing the work of God, regardless of where or what they do in their honorable vocation in life.

.

Dressing the Part

To celebrate this blessing of vocation we will be taking the Sunday of Labor Day weekend to give thanks for the blessings of daily bread, of work, of school, of family, etc.  To enhance our time together you are invited to wear the clothes or uniform of your current, prior to retirement, or planned for vocation (such as students or children seeking to enter a certain career).  No matter what, know that we will be giving thanks for, and honoring, all that God has called each of us to do as part of his greater work in the world.  Know that who each of us is and what God has called and equipped each of us to do is important.  On Sunday, September 4, we will take time to give thanks for all which God calls and equips us to do.

Food and Fellowship

As part of this we will have a pot-luck lunch following worship.  The committee in charge of this event will provide barbecue pork and condiments, along with beverages.  You are invited to bring a side, salad or dessert to share.

COVID 19 Carona Virus Update

Important Notice about COVID 19

The Church Council of MLLC has made the decision to suspend worship services and other church activities from now (March 18, 2020) through at least April 3, 2020.  This is due to the significant, worldwide health crisis of the COVID 19 Pandemic.  The council did not take this decision lightly, as this is a new and dramatic step for the congregation.  They consulted with area congregations, our Gulf Coast Synod, as well as government health officials.  We will send out updates as these become available.

Please read the notice here:  Click Link

The Daily Bible Readings through April 3 are here:  Click Link

The church staff and leadership are still here for you in these trying times.  We will have devotional items and other items available through this web site.

Thankoffering Sunday

Also on November 10 we will celebrate our annual Thankoffering Sunday.  This is our annual celebration of women in ministry and our partnership with the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (WELCA).  This will take place on Sunday, November 10 at our 10 a.m. worship service.  Our guest presenters will be the Hilltop Ramblers from Greenvine Emmanuel Lutheran Church (Burton, TX).

Here is a brief history of Thankoffering Sunday:

As we collect the Thankoffering today, we share in a tradition dating back to the 1800s, when Christian women formed “mite” or “cent” societies to fund mission. When others in the church said there was not enough money to carry out these projects, the women believed otherwise. In cent societies, each woman collected offerings at home. They would gather as we do today to worship and combine their offerings and offer them up with thanks and praise, dedicating the funds to mission. When Women of the ELCA was formed more than 25 years ago, we committed to continue this tradition of giving in gratitude for blessings. Each year, in thousands of congregations, Thankofferings are collected and sent to support the life-changing ministries of Women of the ELCA. Together, we do more than we could ever do apart. In gratitude for all God has given to us, and with hope for all that is to come, we celebrate Thankoffering.

Dedication of Quilts, Blankets and Kits

Our Palm Sunday Tradition

Each year at this time we gather up the items we have prepared to send to Lutheran World Relief.  We dedicate these during worship on Palm Sunday.  Then, during Holy Week we pack up these items and then ship these off to Lutheran World Relief.  This partner organization then distributes these items around the world to people in need.

We will gather in the Mission & Ministry Building on Wednesday, March 28, at 2:00 p.m. to pack these quilts and blankets.  Please come and help as you are able.  With extra help this important task will go quickly.  This Mission & Ministry building is located across the street from the main church building, and behind the Parsonage.  The building address is 250 Augsburg Ave, Carmine, TX 78932.

Throughout the year dedicated volunteers give of their time, energy and resources to prepare these items for those in need.  Out of love for God and neighbor, these adults and youth put in the time and effort to make all this possible.

With the loving service of so many we have set a record for quilts and blankets for our congregation to give to Lutheran World Relief.  There are 49 quilts and 13 fleece blankets this year.

We have prepared the quilts for Lutheran World Relief for many years now.  Our dedicated volunteers use donated cloth, and they purchase the batting for the inside of the quilts.  Here is an example of one of the quilts.

We even have a quilting room set up in our Mission & Ministry Building.  This building was added to our church facilities in 2015.

The Fleece Blankets are a newer addition to our work for Lutheran World Relief.  These are also prepared in the Mission & Ministry building.  Here is an example of one of these new blankets.
