God’s Care for the Hard Times at Holidays

While taking part in our preparations for all the joyous special services and events of the Christmas season, our thoughts and prayers go out to those who struggle with grief, difficult feelings, and sad memories at this time of years.  The feelings these persons are experiencing is hard to bear at any time.  At Christmas, it is likely to be even more difficult.   These are normal feelings. Our friends at Shared Lutheran Ministry of Fayette County are offering a Longest Night Service.  This is an opportunity to connect with God and one another as we experience struggles and grief in this time.

Decorate the Christmas Tree – November 27

Join the Fun and Joy

We will gather after worship on Sunday, November 27, to decorate the MLLC Sanctuary for the Advent and Christmas Seasons.  This will take place about 11:00 a.m. on Sunday.  We need plenty of volunteer workers of all ages to help with this fun and joyful event.

As always, we gather for worship at 10 a.m. on Sunday.  This is the beginning of Advent, and it is a special and meaningful time to gather with fellow Christians. Come for worship.  Then stay to decorate.

We also offer worship every Saturday at 6 p.m.

One of the joys of our decorating is the use of Chrismons.  As part of our decorating we will hang the Chrismons for the tree.  These were made following patterns suggested and offered by the originators of Chrismons (click this link for more information from the official web site of Chrismons).

Here are some of the Chrismons which were carefully wrapped for storage since last year.

Thanksgiving Eve – November 23

Let us Give Thanks to the Lord

Thanksgiving Eve Worship Service – November 23 – 7 p.m.

You are invited to attend the annual Thanksgiving Eve service this Wednesday, November 23, 2022.  The service will be held at 7:00 p.m. at the building of our partner church, Waldeck Evangelical Lutheran Church.  That church is located at 6915 Waldeck Church Lane.  This is at the intersection of FM 2145 and FM 1291, just 6.5 miles south of Ledbetter.

Again this year is that we have invited the other two churches from the Crossroads Shared Lutheran Ministries to worship with us.  The people of St. Paul Lutheran in Shelby and Bethlehem Lutheran in Round Top will join with us for this special time of giving thanks.  Of course, all from the community are invited to participate, even if they are not members of any of these four churches.

Even with the busy schedule of the holiday, it is good to take a notable pause to gather for worship, to pray, to thank Lord, to show our thanks in the Holy Communion, and more.  So, just before the big day, our national day of Thanksgiving, take time to gather with one another to thank the Lord and sing his praise.

Luther’s 95 Theses and the Reformation 2022

Wittenberg Door

Reformation Sunday is October 29-30, 2022

We will gather this weekend, October 29-30, for worship.  Saturday at 6 p.m. at the church and Sunday at 9:30 a.m. for our special service at Lutherhill camp near La Grange.  See this link for full details.

Our theme for the day will be Reformation Day.  We will remember and give thanks for the ministry of Martin Luther and the Reformers of the 1500s.  We choose this date because it is the final Sunday in October, and the Sunday in October closest to Reformation Day (October 31).  That is the date on which Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses on the castle church door in Wittenberg, in what is now Germany.

We have a permanent spot on our church web site which has a modern translation of Luther’s 95 Theses, as well we a brief explanation of the major themes.  You are invited to click on this link to view that page.  A printed version of this same information is available at the church in the Narthex/lobby.

Another part of our celebration of Reformation Sunday/Weekend is that we will display our Martin Luther Banner.  This will be on the banner stand, just to the left as you face the altar at MLLC.  It will be on view at the Lutherhill service as well. Here is a catalog image of that banner.

Worship at Lutherhill on October 30

Special Worship Schedule and Location – October 30

No Service at MLLC on October 30 – Worship at Lutherhill instead.

We will have worship on Sunday, October 30, but it will not be at MLLC. Worship will be held at our local Lutheran Church camp, Lutherhill Ministries.  We will gather for worship at 9:30 a.m. in the Carby Chapel on the camp grounds.  The photo above shows the Carby Chapel from the road and parking lot viewpoint.

After Worship – kids time

Sunday School for children, led by Lutherhill staff

We look to have a strong showing from the people of Martin Luther Lutheran Church, and all the Crossroads churches, for this special event.

Remember, we will not have a worship service on October 30 at MLLC (or any of the Crossroads Shared Lutheran Ministry congregations).

MLLC will offer the usual, Saturday evening service on October 29, at 6 p.m.  –  All are welcome.

.

Reformation Sunday

The Crossroads Shared Ministry Committee chose this date for our shared worship service due to it being a special day for Lutheran Christians.  October 31, 1517, was when Martin Luther posted the 95 Theses on the Castle Church Door in Wittenberg, Germany.  Here is a link for a modern English version of this important, Lutheran document.

Getting to Lutherhill

We encourage you to bring folks who may be uncomfortable traveling to the camp on their own, or who would need a ride.  This will be a wonderful event for all ages.

Lutherhill is located just north of La Grange at 3782 Lutherhill Rd, La Grange, TX 78945. Once you enter the main camp entrance, you will be heading east.  Follow the long gravel road until you see the signs for Carby Chapel.  This will lead you to follow a road to the left/north, which leads to the chapel.  This part of the camp is depicted on the map noted right below on this page.

Carby Chapel is in the north central part of the camp.

Here is a close up of the portion of a map with Carby Chapel and nearby parking.

This is a once a year special event in which we gather with our group of 4 Crossroads Shared Lutheran Ministry partner churches for a time of worship and learning.

The four Crossroads Shared Lutheran Ministry congregations are:

St. Paul Lutheran in Shelby (Fayetteville)

Bethlehem Lutheran in Round Top

Waldeck Evangelical Lutheran in Ledbetter

New Adult Class – Communion

CommunionBreadWine

New Adult Bible Study:

Reviewing First Holy Communion

By Pastor David Tinker          pastordjt@gmail.com   Office: 979-278-3388

Wednesday evenings, 7:00 – 8:15 p.m.

September 7, 14, 21, 28, October 12, 19, 26  (No class on October 5)

In the Parlor – the fellowship room by the offices at Martin Luther – Carmine

Come to as many classes as you are able.  Even if you need to miss a class, you will benefit by participating as much as you are able.

Recommended age range:  Teens and adults.

It is helpful, but not required, to sign up. See sign-up sheet at each church.  Or contact me in person, by email, or by phone.

.

About the Class:

When I teach a First Holy Communion Class with children, I also invite a parent, grandparent, or guardian to attend with the student.  Every time I have done this, the adults get to revisit their own faith and connection with the Sacrament.  They enjoy learning about and talking about their faith with fresh and more mature eyes of faith and understanding.

Some teens and adults, due to various reasons, have never participated in such a class.  They may not have participated in any confirmation class or similar program when they have joined a church. Some may not have participated in any study class since their youth.  This is a wonderful opportunity to come to learn as an adult. Some teens and adults simply want to revisit and deepen their understanding of God’s gift of Holy Communion.  Reviewing our faith and practices will give us a deeper connection to our Lord in faith.

.

In light of these and other realities, I am offering a class this fall for the Waldeck and Martin Luther congregations and for anybody else who might be interested.  It will be based on the class I have been teaching as a pastor for the past 28 years.   We will experience the same things which the children do.  There will be additional elements added due to the higher maturity level of the students.

*We will watch the same videos the children do.

*We will look at much of what the Holy Scriptures and Luther’s Catechisms teach.

*We will learn about Lutheran theology about what a Sacrament is and what four items are needed for Holy Communion.

*We will tour the sacristy and learn about the various vessels, objects, etc. which are used for Holy Communion serving.

*We will make bread together and use this for a future worship service.

*We will have some fun.

*We will learn more about reverence in how we participate in Holy Communion.

*We will learn about the Holy Communion Liturgy, prayers, etc.

*We will look at what happened at the Last Supper.

*We will gain some understanding of the direct connection between the Jewish Passover Meal and the Holy Communion.

*We will be reminded about the gifts of repentance and forgiveness founded in God’s love, grace, and mercy.
