The Obituary

Joy Dale (Ullrich) Treude

June 6, 1953 – August 28, 2023

Joy Treude, 70, of Burton, peacefully passed away August 28, 2023 with her loving husband by her side.

Joy was born June 6, 1953 in Brenham to Harry and Evelyn (Mertz) Ullrich. She was baptized on November 26, 1953 and confirmed on April 3, 1966 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Round Top.  She attended Burton ISD and graduated in 1971.  On June 3, 1972, she married Glenn Treude at Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Carmine. In 1974, they were blessed with the arrival of their first daughter, Gwen Dale, and four years later welcomed another daughter, Glenda Joy. While raising the girls, she also opened her home for child care. Joy was a loyal employee at Zing’s Restaurant in Carmine, Round Top Mercantile, and Round Top Retreat. In recent years, she cleaned homes, offices, and event centers where she was meticulous and took great pride in her work.

One of Joy’s greatest pleasures was preparing Sunday lunch for her family. She looked forward to this weekly tradition that started with her mother. One of her favorite hobbies was attending her grandchildren’s livestock shows and sporting events where she was a very passionate supporter and proud “Meme.” She also was an avid Astros fan and loved watching them every chance she could. Always giving and thinking of others, Joy cared for her mother and sister during their greatest times of need. Her loyal dogs Lucy, Daisy, and Copper, cat Olivia, and 10 red hens brought happiness and comfort to her days. She actively committed to local blood drives, generously donating at least 72 pints over her lifetime.

Survivors include her husband of 51 years Glenn Treude of Burton; daughters, Gwen Stork and husband Robbie of Carmine, and Glenda Oakes and husband Cassius of Winedale; grandchildren, Faith Stork and special friend Tanner Whitsel, Rylan Stork and special friend Charlee Wessels, and Drayton Oakes; siblings, Henry Ullrich and wife Chris, Edith Ullrich, and Ray Ullrich and wife Joann; sister-in-laws, Charlene Mueller and husband Charles and Darlene Weyand. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Joy is preceded in death by her parents, sister Marge Morris, parents-in-law Edwin and Elfrieda (Hinze) Treude, and brother-in-law ElGene Weyand.

THE OBITUARY

Otto Lorenz Fuchs, Jr.

October 25, 1925 – August 10, 2023

Otto Lorenz Fuchs, Jr., 97, of Carmine, widower of Carolyn Elizabeth Rothermel Fuchs passed away peacefully on August 10, 2023 in Brenham Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Otto L. Fuchs, Jr. was born October 25, 1925 on the family homestead in Carmine to Otto Lorenz, Sr. and Elsie Hartstack Fuchs. He was baptized on February 21, 1926 by Pastor A. H. Falkenberg at Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Carmine and was confirmed at the same church on Palm Sunday, April 2, 1939 by Pastor Henry Brunotte. On July 28, 1951, he was united in marriage to Carolyn Elizabeth Rothermel at St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed Church in Burton by Pastor E. H. Schwengel. They were blessed with 61 years of married life.

He attended LaBahia and Carmine schools and was a 1943 graduate of La Grange High School. He was inducted into the United States Army on May 18, 1944, proudly serving his country during World War II, attaining the rank of Corporal in Company I, 222nd Infantry Regiment, 42nd Rainbow Infantry Division, 7th Army, for 26 months.  In addition to his infantry basic training, his military occupations included rifleman, armorer, and investigator/interpreter (due to being fluent in the German language).  He was awarded the European Theater Operation Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, Army Occupation Ribbon-Germany, Victory Ribbon, and three Overseas Service Bars.  In 2001, sixty years after the battle, he received a Presidential Unit Citation for participation in Operation Northwind, commonly referred to as the Battle of the Bulge. Defending their line from ice-filled foxholes, his unit assisted in holding off the German push to invade France.  His company also contributed to the liberation of the Dachau Concentration Camp.  While delivering a Veterans’ Day speech in 2017, Otto said, “I am honored to have been a member of the Greatest Generation and I would answer the call of duty again, if able.”

After his military service, he attended Blinn College for one year, during which he “fell” for his future bride, Carolyn, when the Blinn bus seat they were sharing broke as the driver took the railroad crossing too fast.  He graduated from the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas, now known as Texas A&M University, in 1950 with a B. S. in Agricultural Education.  From 1950 to 1955 he taught Veterans Vocational Agriculture classes in Round Top and La Grange.  He served as the Round Top-Carmine Vocational Ag teacher beginning in 1955 until his retirement in 1984.  During this time, he organized the Round Top-Carmine Future Farmers of America Chapter, the Round Top-Carmine Young Farmers Chapter, and the Precinct #2 Fayette County Hay Insurance Group.  His love for teaching never stopped, as he sponsored 27 adult vocational classes.  Evidence of his teaching and guidance can be seen displayed throughout the area in the homes, farms, and ranches of his successful former students.

Otto was a faithful lifetime member of Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Carmine.  As a devoted member, he served several terms on the church council and various church committees, taught Sunday School for several years, was a church choir member for over forty years, and a member of the Men in Mission his entire adulthood.  He was a lifetime member of Quade-Werchan American Legion Post #338 of Round Top-Carmine for 80 years, serving as Commander, Adjutant, Finance Officer, and 30 years as Chaplain.  Other lifetime memberships included Texas Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association, Texas State Teachers Association, and 42nd Rainbow Division Veterans Foundation.  He was also a member of the Texas A&M Former Students Association, Fayette County Retired Teachers Association, Round Top-Carmine Young Farmers Chapter, Precinct #2 Fayette County Hay Insurance Group, Washington County Genealogical Society, Texas Rose Rustlers, German Texas Heritage Society, Carmine Chamber of Commerce, and was a volunteer member of the Carmine Fire Department since 1946.  He served on the Carmine State Bank Board of Directors, Fayette County Fair Board, Fayette County Junior Livestock Show Board, Round Top-Carmine School Board, Fayette County Appraisal District Review Board, Fayette County Recycling Committee, and Fayette County Independent Cattlemans’ Association Board.

Otto’s love for the smell of fresh plowed soil led to his dedicated work in his vegetable garden, producing an abundant harvest that he happily shared with family and friends. His livestock, especially his cattle, were always well taken care of, as he checked them daily, often joined by family members.  He delighted in spending time on his John Deere tractors to care for his farm.  Being a handyman with a level eye and excellent welder, if anything on the farm or in the house needed repair, he could usually fix it himself.  He was happy to share his knowledge and talents to help others as well.  Otto was known for his love for watching Texas Aggies, Astros, and game show.

He loved his family dearly and they all brought him much joy. He enjoyed attending their special occasions and other activities and hearing about things happening in their lives.  Family time was spent enjoying his barbequed pork ribs and his farm raised fried catfish.  Otto was a very patient man, especially while shopping with his wife, two daughters, and grandchildren.  He was a loving and devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and great-uncle. He will be greatly missed but is now at peace in our Father’s heavenly home.

Otto is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Carobeth and Bruce Bockhorn and Rebecca and Mark Kuecker, all of Carmine; grandchildren: Lucas and Chris Ann Stroech, Carolise and Benjamin Kelly, Dawn and Gary Bolcerek, and Clint and RaChelle Kuecker; great-grandchildren: Graceyn, Braelyn, and Kaleb Stroech, Caroleen and Zackary Kelly, Jessalynn and Jaseton Bolcerek, and Jax, Ripkyn, and Harley Kuecker; step-grandchildren, Lee Bockhorn and Laura Fiedler and their families; sister-in-law Joyce Fuchs; and numerous nieces and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn, his parents, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Carl and Erma Rothermel; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Dellora and Edison Manske and Shirley and J. D. Mueller, brother Howard Fuchs, and sister-in-law Nina Ellermann and her husband Henry Al. Serving as pallbearers are grandsons, Lucas Stroech, Clint Kuecker, Gary Bolcerek, and Benjamin Kelly; nephew, Stanley Manske, and great-nephew, Trent Teinert.  Honorary pallbearers are granddaughters, Dawn Bolcerek, Carolise Kelly, Chris Ann Stroech, and RaChelle Kuecker; great-nephew, Ryan Finke; members of Quade-Werchan American Legion Post #338, Carmine State Bank Board of Directors, and MLLC Men in Mission.

Joyce was born in Jeff City, Oklahoma on September 24, 1934, to Charles and Juanita Jones. Her family moved quite a bit during her childhood, with her father following work opportunities mostly in Texas and Oregon. This gave her a sense of wanderlust and a love for travel that she kept her whole life. Joyce worked as a waitress in high end restaurants serving such celebrities as Ronald Reagan, Johnny Cash, Charlie Pride and numerous others.  She then got a job at Methodist Hospital in Houston and took nursing classes at San Jacinto College in Deer Park, Texas.  In 1974 she began her career as a Chemical Operator for Shell Oil Company where she was one of the few women brave enough and strong enough to do a “man’s job” and stand up to the opposition.  She stayed there nearly 20 years before retiring to Carmine.

Joyce enjoyed life in Carmine, TX and made many friends. She was involved with the Red Hat Club, Lions Club, Homemakers club, and her dominoes groups. She was a member of Martin Luther Lutheran Church. Joyce was deeply proud of her membership with the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Joyce was a loving and dedicated mother to her children Debi, Kelly, and Rhonda. She had a special love for her grandchildren. For Joyce, being “Grandma” or “Gram” was such an important role that she became known as “Grandma” to everyone in the family. Joyce had an impressive memory and was the family historian.

Nevilee Ruth Wagner Marburger was born April 26, 1925, at home near Carmine, Texas, to John and Clara Wagner.  She was baptized on October 4, 1925, in Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Carmine, by Pastor A. H. Falkenberg of Round Top, Texas.  She was confirmed on Palm Sunday, in 1939, by Rev. H. Brunette.  Her confirmation verse was Philippians 4:13 – “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”

Nevilee graduated from La Grange High School in 1943.  She met Clinton Marburger at a Labor Day dance in La Bahia before the war.  While Clinton served in the Army Air Force during WW II, Nevilee attended Blinn College, completed her teaching certification in 1945, and started teaching elementary school.  Both Nevilee and Clinton were only children, so they each had family responsibilities to consider, and together they made an incredible team.

Nevilee and Clinton were married by Rev. Leo H. Simon at Nevilee’s family home on August 24, 1947.  They began their life together in Port Arthur, Texas, where Clinton was employed at the Gulf Oil Refinery and Nevilee was a talented all-encompassing homemaker.  They designed and built two of their homes there, the first in Port Arthur where they welcomed their first child, Mindy Rae, on November 24, Thanksgiving Day in 1949.  The final home was built in Groves, one story, on a slab, with an attached garage and workshop, designed uniquely with the picture window in the back to view the yard, garden, and large patio, and the kitchen windows in the front, above the sink and stove to keep watch while working.  There the family grew.  Randy Vance arrived on March 1st in 1953 (fortunately he missed 1952, a leap year with February 29th on the calendar), and Wendy Kay was born on November 8, Election Day in 1955.

Nevilee was born with a green thumb and always maintained a large vegetable garden, canning the extra tomatoes, beans, and pickles.  Flowers and shrubs always grew in the flower beds that surrounded the house and along the back fence line.  She produced full balanced meals at breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and there was always desert.  We learned to cook, too.

A master seamstress, Nevilee was just as adept at making wedding gowns as she was at sewing tents that would attach to the VW bus that Clinton built out as a traveling camper.  She sewed all our clothes and made dresses for both their mothers when any special occasion arose.  She created square dance outfits for all of us, with rows and rows of rickrack on every tier of the full skirts for the girls, and she donated them 2 years ago, along with the petticoats, to a young group of square dancers that performed at the community center.  She even made a Santa suit for Clinton that was used for years to add to the Christmas toy delivery excitement, and later that suit was stuffed to come out of a chimney on top the station wagon for parades.  We learned to sew, too.

Hair was also under Nevilee’s management.  She cut everyone’s hair in the family, as well as her own, both of their mother’s, and that of a friend or two.  Perms were a requirement reserved for the females in the group.  Sadly, like clockwork, Mindy and Wendy would be given perms just before school pictures.

A teacher by training, Nevilee was very involved in making sure her children developed certain life skills as youngsters.  Trips to the public library to check out books to fill the allotted loan time was a regular activity.  We all had swimming lessons, piano lessons, and learned to play dominoes, cards, and board games.  She was a participating leader in Blue Birds, Campfire Girls, and Cub Scouts.  We fished, crabbed, and trawled for shrimp with the boat that Dad built; some of us learned and loved to ski.  We all took individual dancing lessons and later learned to square dance and ballroom dance.

Nevilee was active in the Ladies Aid group at church and provided transportation when needed for her mother-in-law who did not drive.  She saw that her children attended Sunday School and Vacation Bible School and coordinated the gathering of the out-of-town sponsors and their families in Port Arthur to participate in the Baptism and Confirmations of three children.  Trips to the beach were often the unique activity offered to visitors to our part of the world.  The smell of the refineries on those trips to and from the beach were also uniquely Port Arthur.

While their kids received a lot of attention, Clinton and Nevilee were also good about scheduling time for themselves.  They loved to dance, and while they were active square dancers in Port Arthur, for years they drove 4 hours after work on Friday from Port Arthur to enjoy Saturday night country dances at the various area halls.  This helped maintain relationships they continued when Clinton retired after 36 years with Gulf.  Nevilee and Clinton returned to Burton in 1982, became full-time ranchers, and made the 1923 Wagner-Marburger homestead their own.  They were active members of the Top Cat Dance Club in Brenham until Clinton’s death in 2006.  They had been married for 59 years.

Games were also always a big part of their social life.  Nevilee played Bridge and shared desert in the homes of friends in Port Arthur, participated in evening couples’ groups for 42 dominoes and card games with Clinton, and enjoyed games with other ladies during the day at churches in the Brenham area.  In Houston, she became active in the 42 Domino group at the Wirt Rd Community Center three days a week from 9 a.m.f to noon until earlier this year.  She was the oldest, one of the few females, and a beloved winner at her game.  Before COVID-19, these days extended into the afternoon, when she played Canasta with a different group.

Nevilee cared for her own mom in Port Arthur when she could no longer be safely alone on the farm.  Nevilee’s move to Houston became permanent in April of 2010 after several medical crises in and out of hospitals and facilities that all began with a fall in the pasture in November 2008.  It was hard for her to leave her garden, her grand pecan tree, and her cattle, particularly the old cows that she saw as pets.  More time was spent in hospitals and nursing care facilities in Houston as she recovered, so Nevilee’s newly arrived female stray pit bull moved in with nearby Sarah, her granddaughter, and “Trouble” bonded with Dylan, Nevilee’s first great-grandchild.

As Nevilee regained her strength, she wanted a lap dog and was able to rescue Thelma, a large chihuahua whose owner had died.  Thelma, now 11 years old, became her soul mate over the past 8 years.  When the move from Mindy’s home to Assisted Living became necessary on June 30th of this year, the separation from Thelma was the most difficult.

No longer able to predictably stand or walk, Nevilee’s other remaining pleasure was reading the Brenham Banner and materials from the Church.  She contributed to the records of the Kieke, Eichler, and Noak reunions for many years with information gleaned from those papers. Her membership in the Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Carmine was also very important, and she stayed connected through the mailings and the visits by Pastor Tinker.  Her failing vision made that sedentary pleasure too difficult in her last weeks.

Nevilee handled so much physical decline in the past year with acceptance, including the last hospital discharge to Memory Care on August 25th, but on November 29th, when her lungs were no longer able to provide enough oxygen to survive without invasive interventions, it was not difficult to follow her wishes for comfort.  She was admitted from the ER to an inpatient hospice suite in Houston, and with Sarah, Randy, Wendy, and Mindy at her bedside, and Laura, Doug, Chris, Taylor, and Pastor Tinker on the phone, we were each able to say our goodbyes.  At the age of 97 ½ years, Nevilee died peacefully, shortly after midnight on November 30th.  The burden of trying to make her increasingly difficult life better has been lifted, and it is hoped that she is dancing with Clinton and playing 42 with the many friends who have gone before.

Nevilee Wagner Marburger and Clinton had three children, Mindy Rae Lawrence, Randy Vance Marburger, and Wendy Kay Maltba.

Survivors include her three children; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Children:  Mindy Lawrence of Houston, TX; Randy Marburger and wife Cora Belle (Harrington) of Burton, TX; and Wendy and husband Michael Wayne Maltba of Orange, TX.

Grandchildren:  Sarah Alexis Rae (Jeremy James) Odom; Laura Beth (Bryan Lane) Lee; Douglas Wayne (Stephanie Nicole) Marburger; Christopher Joseph (Danielle) Bodin; and Taylor Nicole (Joseph Brian) Delaney.

THE OBITUARY

James Curtis “J.C.” Pohl

July 23, 1938 ~ October 16, 2022 (age 84)

JC Pohl, 84, passed away peacefully at CHI St. Joseph in Bryan, Texas, on October 16, 2022.

James Curtis Pohl was born on July 23, 1938, in Carmine, Texas to parents Ermagarten (Jacob) and Richard Pohl. He was baptized at Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Carmine, Oct. 16, 1938 with Pastor Henry Brunotte and he affirmed his faith through confirmation on November 4, 1951 with Pastor A. T. Kluge. JC’s confirmation verse was John 5:24, which reads, “Truly, Truly, I say to you, he who hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life, and does not come under judgment, but has passed from death to life.” JC grew up in Carmine, Texas and graduated from Round Top Carmine High School in 1957.

On March 19, 1957, JC was united in marriage to the love of his life, Avalda Ida (Mueller) at MLLC. They shared over 65 wonderful years together and were blessed with 3 children, Debbie, Jody, and Connie to their union.

JC worked alongside of his father until 1991, when he took over ownership of the City Garage.  JC took pride in the work skills he possessed and customer service at the City Garage. JC had a servant’s heart he rarely turned down services needed even to strangers when they could not pay. Those who visited the City Garage frequently, know he introduced “air tools” in the form of “air born” wrenches to Carmine.

JC’s pride and joy was the Carmine Volunteer Fire Department in which he served as the Fire Chief and President throughout many years. He joined the Fire Department at the young age of 15, at this time it started with only two 1946 model trucks and an army barrack meeting room. Throughout the years, he helped build the department into what it is today.

JC had many hobbies and interests, from an early age he loved baseball, in which he excelled. After high school, he continued to play Sunday league baseball, then transitioned into men’s slow pitch softball, and finished his baseball career coaching Jake’s Chicks women’s softball.  One of JC’s life’s pleasures was deer hunting with his fellow hunters. He enjoyed video taping the deer and other wildlife at his deer stand and sharing his videos with his family and friends. JC also enjoyed camping with his family and extended family in his converted school bus.  JC enjoyed daily trips with his beloved wife Avalda to their camphouse to tend to their herd of Longhorns and Charolais.  JC had a soft heart for animals in need and he adopted and loved many strays through his life.

JC proudly served his country in the National Guard Armory. He was stationed in Fort Polk, Louisiana where he was appointed Motor Pool Sergeant. His platoon received awards for the best kept vehicles and two awards for sharpest looking jeep.

JC was very active in the numerous community organizations throughout the Fayette County area. Some of his services and accolades were; President of the Carmine Volunteer Fire Department, Past President of Round Top Carmine ISD School Board, Past President of the Lions Club, Past President of Carmine Gun and Rod Club (Old Flag Pond), 2016 Carmine Citizen of the Year, the very first City Council which helped start the Carmine Water Supply and forming of the City Park, MLLC Church Council member and Building Committee of the new church, Fayette County Appraisal District Tax Board, Sales Representative of Farm Bureau, American Legion member, Carmine State Bank Board Member, and a member of the Carmine Hall.

THE OBITUARY

Roger Dale Schoenst

February 19, 1953 – June 26, 2022

Roger Dale Schoenst went to be with the Lord and those faithfully departed loved ones early on June 26, 2022.

He was born on February 19, 1953, to Fritz Conrad Sr. and Estella Ida (Neumann) Schoenst at The Farm near Carmine. Roger was a member of the Martin Luther Lutheran Church. He was baptized on January 24, 1954 by Pastor A.T. Kluge and confirmed his faith on May 26, 1968 with Pastor Irvin S. Briese, both at Martin Luther Lutheran Church. His confirmation verse was: Matthew 5:6:  “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.”

He grew up loving the cowboy way of life. He broke horses and continued to halter break colts until the last two months of his life. Roger never met a stranger. Anywhere he went he could strike up a conversation. He loved his family, horses, cowboy things, and talking to people. Roger also enjoyed hunting as a young boy, shooting guns, drawing, leather work, and creating things with a wood-burning pen.

He met the love of his life, and this changed his life for the better. He married Kathy Diane Mantey on November 12, 1983, at Saint John’s United Church of Christ in Burton, Texas, with Pastor Glenn Schoeneberg officiating. Soon came Heather, Mandy, and Chance. They had adventurous years raising their family and spent much of their time riding at home or in cutting arenas, round pens, working pens, show arenas and sale barns. He would do just about anything for his family and loved ones.

Roger had several different medical issues he had to battle throughout his life and was able to come out on the other side. The most notable these being the liver transplant he received in 2006. He and his family are forever grateful and appreciative of how the community supported him. Transplant doctors estimated a 6-year life expectancy, which turned into 16. The greatest blessing of his life was being able to meet his four grandchildren, all of whom he absolutely adored!

He is survived by his wife Kathy of 38 years, daughter Heather and husband Kyle Kaspar, daughter Mandy and husband Colton Guelker, son Chance Schoenst, grandchildren: Kylee, Heath, and Hunter Kaspar, and Ida Blackwell, brother Melvin Schoenst, sister-in-law Jeanette Schoenst, cousin Wilton and wife Pam Schoenst and their children and grandchildren. He is also survived by numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Fritz Conrad Sr. and Estella (Neumann) Schoenst, brother Fritz Schoenst Jr., in-law parents Arthur and Bernice (Buerger) Mantey, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Serving as pallbearers will be son Chance Schoenst, sons-in-law Kyle Kaspar and Colton Guelker, friends: Willie McKenzie, Nick Robinson, and Nathan Dannar. Honorary Pallbearers will be brother, Melvin Schoenst, daughters, Heather Kaspar and Mandy Guelker, grandchildren, Kylee, Heath, and Hunter Kaspar, and Ida Blackwell, nieces and nephews, Sue Schoenst and Kim Sternadel and Staci and Nick Brailas, LaCinda Kasparek and Wynona Posas.
