Reformation Sunday is October 27

We will gather this weekend, October 26 and 27, for worship as we usually do. Saturday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 10 a.m. Our theme for the day will be Reformation Day. We will remember and give thanks for the ministry of Martin Luther and the Reformers of the 1500s. We choose this date because it is the final Sunday in October, and the Sunday in October closest to Reformation Day (October 31). That is the date on which Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses on the castle church door in Wittenberg, in what is now Germany.

We have a permanent spot on our church web site which has a modern translation of Luther’s 95 Theses, as well we a brief explanation of the major themes. You are invited to click on this link to view that page. A printed version of this same information is available at the church in the Narthex/lobby.

Another part of our celebration of Reformation Sunday/Weekend is that we will display our Martin Luther Banner. This will be on the banner stand, just to the left as you face the altar at MLLC. Here is a catalog image of that banner.

Olive Wood Crafts – October 26-27

On Saturday and Sunday, October 26-27, 2019, we will have a special opportunity to view products and creations in olive wood created by the hands of Christian artisans in and around the Holy Land region. The Rishmawi Family has been designated as the representative for these wonderful Christian artisans and has been authorized to show their olive wood carvings.

These items will be displayed on tables in the parlor (the room near the Sanctuary and the church offices). The items will be available both before and after our regular worship services. Saturday, September 8, at 6:00 p.m.; and Sunday, September 9, at 10:00 a.m.

Most, if not all, of the items will also be available for purchase. The sale of these items supports the Christian families and their ongoing witness in the land of Jesus’ birth and ministry.

The tradition of Olive wood carvings in the Holy Land has been handed down from father to son since the 12th century. Due to the difficulties the last few years in the Middle East, tourism has been dramatically reduced and these folks have suffered greatly. This is causing the Christian community to immigrate to different countries leaving the Christian population at 2% today from 25% ten years ago.

We invite you to visit their display tables and view some of the finest handcrafts available from the Holy Land. This Family strives to bring these fine carvings to our church.

Patsy (Blackburn) Simpson Obituary

We remember Patsy (Blackburn) Simpson

Patsy Simpson was raised in the Carmine area and was confirmed at MLLC in 1946. When she was confirmed at MLLC, her Confirmation Bible Verse was Luke 10:42, which reads: “But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” This verse from Luke’s Gospel is in the context of the visit of Jesus to the home of Mary and Martha. During that visit, Mary sat at the feet of Jesus as he taught those present.

For most of her adult life she lived out of the Carmine area. For her funeral and burial she is returning to Carmine. Graveside services will be held at 2p.m. Wednesday, October 23, 2019 at Carmine Cemetery in Carmine, Texas. All are welcome. Pastor David Tinker will be officiating. Patsy’s niece and MLLC member, Cherrie Wines, made the arrangements for the service in Carmine.

Obituary

Life Dates: December 16, 1929 – October 18, 2019

Patsy Ruth Simpson, 89, of Antlers, Oklahoma passed from this life October 18, 2019. Patsy was born in Carmine, Texas on December 16, 1929 to Wayne Bishop Blackburn & Dorothy Sydell (Weyand) Blackburn Pate. Patsy was a very compassionate and caring person, so it was only fitting that she attended nursing school and worked all of her life as an RN. She enjoyed life every day and found pleasure in the little things like rose bushes, old trucks and antiques. She loved gardening and animals of all kinds, she even raised show chickens and show pigeons and took them to the show every year. Patsy worked at the Pushmataha County Health Department from 1972-1992 an she would always do her best to put a smile on the face of everyone that she came in contact with.

Patsy is preceded in death by her Parents, and a sister Nancy Lee Kartous.

She leaves behind a loving family that includes her sister, Nina Dean Robison of Georgetown, Texas, and half-siblings Ella Fay Carlile of Canton, Texas, Waynell Anderson of Canton, Texas, Wayne Blackburn, Jr. of Clayton, Oklahoma, and Jerry Blackburn of Clayton, Oklahoma, as well as numerous relatives and friends.

Family Night visitation will be held from 6-8p.m. Tuesday, October 22, 2019 at Burkhart Funeral Service of Antlers, Oklahoma. Graveside services will be held at 2p.m. Wednesday, October 23, 2019 at Carmine Cemetery in Carmine, Texas.

Harvest Festival and Homecoming Weekend Worship

The Harvest Festival and Homecoming is this weekend, October 20. We actually have 4 worship opportunities for you. We encourage you to plan to gather with God’s people for worship. You are especially invited to attend one of the alternative time services in the event that your volunteering for the Harvest Festival and Homecoming would conflict with your participation in the 9:30 a.m. service. Planning ahead is a good thing.

Here are times and locations of the four services:

Saturday at 6:00 p.m. at MLLC

Sunday at ~7:00/7:15 a.m. at the Carmine Hall – lower level by kitchen

Sunday at 8:00 a.m. at Waldeck Evangelical Lutheran Church – our partner church,

The Waldeck Church is located at 6915 Waldeck Church Lane, about 6.5 miles south of Ledbetter at the intersection of FM 2145 and FM 1291

Sunday at 9:30 a.m. at the Carmine Hall – upper level – featuring Polka style worship songs

All of these services listed above will offer Holy Communion.

Note that there will be no 10:00 a.m. service at the church this Sunday (October 20). We will resume our normal schedule on the weekend of October 26-27.

Homecoming celebration for Confirmation Classes from years ending with a “4” or a “9”

Worship and Confirmation Class Recognition Starting at 9:30 a.m.

We will begin the worship service by recognizing our Confirmation Class groups and taking photos of each class group together.

Our praise team will lead our singing. The music will be Old Time Gospel worship songs.

Chicken Meal – famous Carmine Fried Chicken

Chicken Meal served 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Tickets are yet to be determined. We will be serving our traditional fried chicken, with side dishes. Starting in September 2019, contact the church office for tickets. 979-278-3388

Live Auction and Silent Auction – items needed

Starting at about 11:30 a.m.

The Silent Auction will conclude at the end of the live auction – current estimate is about 1:30 p.m.

The Stewardship Committee is inviting you to donate items for the 2019 Auction. There will be both a Live Auction and a Silent Auction. They are asking for new items, along with gift certificates/cards, artistic items, and baked goods. These may be brought to the church office. For fresh baked goods you can let office know, and bring your item on the morning of the auction. The Stewardship Committee will make the determination of what items will be offered in each auction.

Games and activities for children

Starting at 11 a.m. we will offer some activities for children at the hall.

Blessing of Backpacks

Blessing of Students and their Backpacks – August 11

We invite students of all ages to attend worship on Sunday, August 11, at 10:00 a.m. At this service we will pray for students of all ages and situations. It is not required that the students bring a backpack, but if they have one it is encouraged to bring it.

This is an opportunity for students to be involved in their faith every day of the week. We connect their school life with how these students grow and learn as an extension of their connection with Jesus.

We involved students of a wide variety of situations. Over the years we have involved students in preschool through graduate school. We have involved students who are enrolled in public schools, private schools, and home school programs. We have involved students who are quite young through those well into their adults years.

Worship will be at 10:00 a.m. (our usual time) on this special Sunday. Remember to bring your backpack, if you use one. Most important is that we gather together in prayer and thanksgiving as we begin our new school year.

Regarding the Vigil of Pentecost and the Day of Pentecost

Pentecost Weekend is June 8 and 9. Read more for details about the special events of this weekend.

This Church Year we continue celebrating the Three Great Festivals of the Church. We are also including the Three Great Vigils of the Church Year. These are:

The Nativity of Our Lord – Celebrating the birth of Jesus

The Resurrection of Our Lord – Celebrating Jesus rising from the tomb

The Day of Pentecost – Celebrating the outpouring of the Holy Spirit

Each of these three major Church Year festivals has a vigil service on the evening before the festival day. These are times of prayerful waiting and preparation for the joyous celebration of the Festivals. Each vigil service includes readings, prayers, singing and, more often than not, Holy Communion. The Vigils of Easter and Pentecost also include a special emphasis on the Sacrament of Holy Baptism. The most well-known vigil here at MLLC is the Vigil of the Nativity of our Lord, also known as Christmas Eve.

The Day of Pentecost and its vigil are taking place this month. You are invited to participate in both of these unique worship experiences. The liturgical color of both these days is red. Therefore, you are invited to wear RED in celebration of the gift and outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

The Vigil of Pentecost

We will hear readings about the Holy Spirit.

Here is what a noted worship writer says about the Vigil of Pentecost:

“From history, we know that Easter and Pentecost were the first two and only feasts of the original Church Year from apostolic times. We also know that the ancient church celebrated a vigil with Easter as early as the second century and with Pentecost universally from the fifth century, likely earlier in various places. We further know that baptisms were also a part of these services, given its promise of resurrection with Christ and gift of the Holy Spirit. Easter, having the earlier vigil, was clearly preferred, with those not baptized then being transferred to Pentecost. If a baptism occurred at some time other than Easter or Pentecost, it not only was highly unusual, but actually limited access to holy orders in the church.

The purpose of the ancient Vigil of Pentecost therefore would have been an awaiting of/preparation for/rehearsing of the great themes of the Day of Pentecost, meaning primarily the Holy Spirit and the Christian life lived under the power and guidance of that same Spirit. You could add to that the idea of the birth of the Church as well.”

The Day of Pentecost

Sunday, June 9 10:00 a.m.

The Day of Pentecost of the fiftieth day of the Easter season. On that fiftieth day we celebrate God the Holy Spirit, through whom and in whom the people of God are created and re-created. We give thanks for the dramatic outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Disciples as they were gathered in one place in Jerusalem. On that day the Holy Spirit came as a rush of violent wind and as tongues of fire on the disciples. They were then sent out by the Spirit to proclaim in various languages the mighty acts of God, specifically the saving work of Jesus through his death on the cross and his rising from the dead. Pentecost is sometimes called the church’s birthday, but might more appropriately be called its baptism day, since the gift of the Spirit is the fullness of baptism.

Holy Week is this Week

The Holy Triduum – the Three Holy Days: Thursday through Saturday

Maundy Thursday – April 18

Worship at MLLC at 7:30 p.m.

This worship service will feature several elements. Several youth will receive their First Holy Communion, and will be presented Bibles from the church. Additionally, there will be the washing of Feet and Hands. At the end of worship we will have the Stripping of the Altar as a symbolic way of remembering the arrest, trial and torture of Jesus.

There will also be a Maundy Thursday Service at 5:45 p.m. at Waldeck Evangelical Lutheran Church, our shared ministry partner. The Church is located at 6915 Waldeck Church Lane, Ledbetter, TX 78946 – this is about 6 miles south of Ledbetter at the corner of FM 2145 and FM 1291.

Good Friday Tenebrae Service – April 19

Worship at MLLC at 7:00 p.m. – a joint event with Waldeck Lutheran Church

We will be remembering the Suffering and Death of Jesus Christ our Lord.

This will include the reading of the St. John Passion account from chapters 18 and 19. At the end of worship we will prayerfully ponder the Seven Last Words of Christ.

The Great Vigil of Easter – Saturday, April 20

Worship at MLLC at 7:00 p.m. – a joint event with Waldeck Lutheran Church

Service of Light, Services of Readings, Remembrance of Baptism, First Holy Communion in celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. This is the first of our three worship services celebrating the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The Resurrection of Our Lord – Easter Sunday, April 21

6:45 a.m. – Sunrise Service at Carmine Cemetery – a joint event with Waldeck Lutheran Church. Bring a lawn or folding chair for seating at the cemetery.

9:00 a.m. – Easter Reception in the Parlor for all ages – coffee and various treats will be served

10:00 a.m. – Festival Worship Service with Holy Communion

After worship – Easter Egg Hunt for the children

8:00 a.m. – Festival Service with Holy Communion. This will be outside in the covered pavilion, as weather permits, or inside as needed.
